Transvaginal Ultrasound
Transvaginal ultrasound is sometimes necessary to provide additional information about the mother or the baby and would only be used when necessary. Transvaginal ultrasound uses an ultrasound probe that will insert into the vagina and allow a sonographer and physician to obtain images of the cervix, uterus, ovaries and in many cases an early, growing baby. In women who are at risk of cervical incompetence or preterm labor, this is a valuable tool in determining your risks for early delivery. Because the probe can be placed close to the cervix and uterus, it is able to provide more detailed pictures. Most women will have little to no discomfort during the study.
All of our sonographers and physicians have been expertly trained to perform Transvaginal ultrasound and all have achieved voluntary certification in the CLEAR program (Cervical Length Education and Review Program). This is a quality review program sponsored by the American College of OB/Gyn (ACOG) and the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine (SMFM).
