Anatomy Ultrasound
Ultrasound of the fetus is an important test that women will have during their pregnancy. Most women will have at least two ultrasounds during their pregnancy. The first is usually in the first trimester and generally performed to confirm the pregnancy, number of babies present and the age of the fetus. Some women have an ultrasound in the first trimester as a screening test for genetic abnormalities.
When an ultrasound is performed in the second trimester at approximately 20 weeks (5 months of pregnancy), the purpose is to evaluate the fetal anatomy and screen for any birth defects that may be present or that may raise the index of suspicion for the presence of a chromosomal or genetic abnormality. Our Physicians and ultrasound technologists are highly trained and experienced professionals who have chosen to specialize in fetal imaging and perform a thorough evaluation of your baby. Our physicians will personally discuss your sonogram results with you and review your ultrasound. Any questions or concerns you may have will be immediately addressed as well as the need for future follow up sonograms and further evaluation.
Although we make every effort to systematically document the anatomy of your baby, there are limitations to the ability of ultrasound to diagnose all fetal abnormalities. We request that prior to having your ultrasound performed you review and sign our Ultrasound Consent form and understand the risks, benefits and limitations of this important procedure.
