Doppler Evaluation

Doppler evaluation is the use of ultrasound to evaluate blood vessels within the growing fetus or in the mother (such as Uterine artery doppler).  Doppler evaluation in the fetus is complex and is needed many times to help in management of babies at risk for fetal anemia, fetal growth restriction, or even to evaluate the fetal heart and determine the rhythm of the fetal heart (during fetal echo).

Doppler evaluation can include the MCA (middle cerebral artery), Umbilical Artery, Ductus venosus, as well as others.

MCA doppler is used to evaluate fetuses at risk for anemia, particularly those who could be compromised by a virus (parvovirus, coxackie virus and others) as well as in women who have antibodies that may destroy fetal red blood cells (Isoimmunization).  By closely monitoring the doppler values in the MCA, patient’s can be managed to a safe gestational age, or if needed they may need treatment with a fetal blood transfusion as a life saving procedure for the baby.

MCA Doppler is also used in conjunction with other doppler studies, including the umbilical artery and fetal ductus venosus to manage pregnancies complicated by poor fetal growth.  By utilizing multivessel doppler evaluation, fetuses who are lagging in growth can be closely monitored so that they may achieve a safe gestational age for delivery.

The physicians at MFAMA are experts in doppler evaluation and have the most up to date ultrasound equipment and knowledge to be able to closely manage at risk patients.
